Structural Treatment (17th/18th century, 42 panel paintings, various sizes, oil on panel)

Overview of all panels from the Hindeloopen interior
During the first year of my post-graduate traineeship at SRAL, we began our year with a group project, 42 panels from a Hindeloopen interior. Structural repairs were carried out on all panels. Splits and cracks in the wood were treated, flaking paint consolidated, old rusty nails removed and woodworm eaten wood was treated.

Locally impregnating woodworm eaten wood
The panels were damaged by woodworm along the edges. These weak and brittle edges were reinforced with a resin.

Documentation of paint layers
The paint layers of the Hindeloopen panels were researched more in depth by taking cross-sections and analyzing these under the microscope. In the cross-section shown here, multiple layers of paint are visible, including a a fluorescent varnish layer on top.

Structural repair of splits and cracks in the wood
The workshops we attended during the traineeship at SRAL gave us the opportunity to learn about consveration approaches from experts in the field. The bridge system shown here was the result of a workshop on the structural conservation of panels. Cracks and splits in de Hindeloopen panels were leveled and glued back together.
